Spice up that Sangria
Memorial Day kicks off summer, and there's no better way to beat the heat than a cold glass of sangria. The classic recipe of one bottle of red wine, 1/3 cup of brandy, and lots of oranges, apples, and ice is great, but you can spice things up with some substitutions.
Instead of red wine, try rosé! The lighter, sweeter wine will cool off your guests in no time.
Don't limit yourself to apples and oranges either - there are tons of fruits that go well with wine. Chop up some pears for a drier option, or you can add berries to make your sangria sweeter.
Nothing is more refreshing than some watermelon on a hot summer day - and with this recipe you don't even have to chew! All you'll need are 2 cups of cubed seedless watermelon, 3/4 cup of white tequila, 1/4 cup of lime juice, and a blender. Pulse the watermelon in the blender until it is a smooth puree, then mix it in with the other ingredients.
If the end product isn't sweet enough for your guests, you can always adjust the flavor by adding in some simple syrup (boil equal parts water and sugar while stirring constantly until dissolved).
This recipe is great if your guests are beer drinkers, but don't want to be left out of the cocktail scene! For an easy option, combine equal parts beer (wheat beer and pilsners are particularly refreshing) and lemonade.
If you want to make a large (and stronger!) batch in advance, you can combine one can of lemonade concentrate with 8 ounces of vodka or white rum in a pitcher. Chill overnight, then mix in beer immediately before serving.
